First off, I'm so excited to capture some magic in your home! In-home lifestyle sessions are all about cozy, candid, and real-life moments, so don’t stress about perfection. Lived-in is beautiful! But a little prep goes a long way in making your photos shine. Here’s how to get your home ready in a simple, stress-free way!
1. Tidy Up (But Don’t Go Overboard!)
You’re busy, I get it! No need to deep clean or hide every sign of life, this is your home, after all. But having at least two areas of the house relatively clutter-free will give us variety in your final images. Think of it as a quick refresh:
- Fluff pillows, fold throw blankets, and straighten up the couch.
- Clear off surfaces like coffee tables and nightstands (but a cozy mug or book is always welcome!).
- Tuck away bright distractions like neon kids’ toys or rogue sippy cups that might steal the show.
🛑 Pro Tip: Look beyond just the immediate area! If the kitchen is in the background of your living room shots, a quick counter wipe-down will keep the focus on your beautiful family, not last night’s dishes.
2. Choose the Best Spots
I recommend picking 2-3 areas where we’ll take photos. Some great options include:
- Living room: Cozy couch snuggles and playful moments.
- Master bedroom: A perfect spot for cuddles and relaxed vibes.
- Nursery: Sweet moments with little ones in their own space.
- A blank wall: Simple and clean for classic, timeless shots.
If you have big windows or lots of natural light in a different space, let’s use it! Speaking of which…
3. Let in the Light!
Natural light is our best friend. Before I arrive, open up all the curtains and blinds to let in as much daylight as possible. Even on cloudy days, natural light makes a world of difference in creating soft, beautiful photos.
4. Dress Comfortably (But Coordinated!)
Since we’re shooting at home, think cozy, neutral, and natural for outfits. Soft tones and minimal patterns photograph beautifully, and bare feet make everything feel relaxed and organic. If bare feet aren't for you, dig deep in the sock drawer for those ones with no logos.
5. Include Your Furry Friends
If you have pets and want them in the photos, give them a little brush and have a treat or toy handy to grab their attention. If they tend to get overly excited, a quick walk or play session beforehand can help them settle.
6. Have a Few Activities in Mind
Some of the best lifestyle shots come from genuine moments. Think about something fun to do as a family, reading a book together, having coffee, playing a board game, or even dancing! This keeps things natural and interactive.
7. Consider Background Music
If you want to set the mood and feel more at ease, play some soft background music. It can help keep little ones entertained and add to the cozy, relaxed atmosphere of the shoot.
8. Relax and Have Fun!
Most importantly, enjoy the process! Lifestyle sessions are all about capturing you and your family just as you are, laughing, playing, and soaking up the moment. So don't worry about a little mess or things not going exactly as planned. Just be yourselves, and I’ll take care of the rest!
Can’t wait to capture your family’s story! See you soon.
